We're Making Improvements At PEEC!
"The new Visitor Activity Center is so unbelievable and so spacious and I love the fact that the building is environmentally friendly"
Roberta Jacoby, Teacher
Elkins Park Middle School

Visitor Activity Center

The VAC received a 2006 Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects. The new facility boasts many sustainable Green properties such as; passive solar heating, natural ventilation methods, energy efficient insulation, day-lighting, and the use of recycled and non-toxic materials for construction.

VAC Ribbon Cutting - PEEC held a Grand Opening Ceremony for the new Visitor Activity Center during its 11th Annual Earth Day Family Festival on Saturday, April 22, 2006. PEEC staff, trustees, local delegates, members and friends helped PEEC Executive Director/CEO Jim Rienhardt and PEEC Trustee Chairperson Barbara Brummer cut the ribbon for the new facility at the end of the ceremony.

First Meal Visitor Activity Center - The new Visitor Activity Center hosted its first school groups during the week of May 22, 2006. Over 350 Students and teachers from Elkins Park Middle School and Our Lady of Peace Middle School enjoyed dining and attending sessions in the new facility throughout their visit to PEEC.

New Group Lodges
PEEC also celebrated the Grand Opening of the two new group lodges in 2006. The new guest lodge sleep 40 guests (20 in each wing). Each wing also includes a private bedroom for 2 adults and a large handicap accessible bathroom with showers. PEEC continued its environmental mission by utilizing sustainable and Green materials for the construction of the lodges. The new lodges have received rave reviews by the schools, scouts and other groups that have had the opportunity to stay in them.

New Family Duplex Cabins
The new Family Duplex Cabins are now complete. The family cabins are located down in PEEC's lower campus and sleep up to 6 people on each side of the cabin. The four new cabins were opened up this spring and are a big hit among groups and families!

New Pavilion & Gazebo
The new Teaching Pavilion and Gazebo are finished in the lower campus. These areas will help PEEC extend its unique outdoor classroom experience.

Yurt Village

The Yurt is a cross between a Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome and a luxury safari tent. The circular, canvas-covered yurts have plywood subfloors, wood lattice walls, windows and a framed door entry. Yurts are becoming very popular and can be found in numerous parks throughout the country. Four of the new yurts sleep up to 8 guests and the other four sleep up to 12 guests. A large stand-alone bathroom/shower facility has been constructed beside the village for our yurt guests. Four of the yurts are also ADA accessible. PEEC's yurts are furnished with bunk beds, heat, electricity, ceiling fans and are now available for groups, families and individuals that are taking part in PEEC's programs.
