March 28, 2009 ~ 2-4pm
Cost: $15 per person
This lecture covers the Ralph Borsodi School of Living project of the 1930s that initiated in Dayton Ohio but came to maturity in Rockland County New York. The lecture considers both the philosophy and psychology of the modern independence movement. Borsodi argued for small scale technologies and sustainable living structures long before these ideas became fashionable in the late 60s and early 70sBorsodi is considered by some to be the Father of Twentieth Century American Decentralism. Author of such works as This Ugly Civilization and Flight From the City, this theorist found himself at the forefront of the twentieth century homesteading movement.. A pioneer in collective living he founded the School of Living in Suffern, NY where he advocated participatory education. From this unique 1930s alternate living experiment we observe much that can be applied to our own times in which we are impacted by centralized economic dependency, rising energy costs, and daily environmental impact. Chuck Stead Lecture: Ford and the Ramapo
May 16, 2009 ~ 2 - 5pm Cost: $30 per person
For twenty five years the Ford Motor Company site at Mahwah NJ was one of the front running shops of automobiles in the United States. When they closed in 1980 they left behind an impressive production record and a massive tonnage of paint sludge consisting of lead base paint mixed with a cocktail of solvents. Most of this material was illegally dumped on land where the Ramapough Indians of NY/NJ reside. Today the legacy of this environmental impact has been a depleted Indian population mostly from immune failure and various cancers. This lecture examines the nature of the material left behind, the slow but certain impact it has on the ecosystem, the equally slow response by both the state and federal regulators, and the tragedy of the contaminated community. Chuck Stead, adjunct professor of Environmental Studies at Ramapo College of NJ has been doing field work on some of these toxic sites and will offer his results and analysis (with accompanying power point). Cindy Fountain, a Ramapough Native, will also speak from a personal perspective as a survivor of contamination on the related issues of this modern saga. ACT 48 hours available for PA teachers.
